Dysfunctional family relationships from "summary" of The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

The Walls family is unlike any other. The parents, Rex and Rose Mary, have a tumultuous relationship that often spills over onto their children. Rex is an alcoholic who can't hold down a job, while Rose Mary is an artist more focused on her work than her responsibilities as a mother. Their dysfunction is evident in the way they prioritize their own needs over those of their children. The children, including the author, Jeannette, are left to fend for themselves in many ways. They often go hungry, wear dirty clothes, and live in squalor. Their parents seem unconcerned with their well-being, more interested in their own pursuits than in providing a stable and nurturing environment for their children. The lack of boundaries within the Walls family also contributes to their dysfunction. Rex and Rose Mary often fail to set limits for their children, allowing them to roam freely and make their own decisions at a young age. This lack of structure leads to chaos and confusion, as the children struggle to understand their place in the world without clear guidance from their parents. Communication within the Walls family is also strained. Rex and Rose Mary rarely discuss important issues with their children, instead choosing to keep secrets and avoid conflict. This lack of open dialogue only serves to perpetuate the dysfunction within the family, as important issues go unaddressed and emotions are left to simmer beneath the surface.
  1. The Walls family remains fiercely loyal to one another. They may not always show it in the most conventional ways, but they are bound together by a deep love and understanding that transcends their flaws. This loyalty is what ultimately allows them to weather the storms that come their way, even as they struggle to overcome the challenges that their dysfunctional relationships present.
