Technology can diminish users' sense of agency from "summary" of The Glass Cage by Nicholas Carr

The digital tools we use in our daily lives, from smartphones to GPS systems, are designed to make our lives easier and more efficient. But as these technologies become increasingly advanced, they also have the ability to diminish our sense of agency - our feeling of control over our own actions and decisions. When we rely on technology to guide us through every aspect of our lives, we may begin to feel less capable of making decisions on our own. For example, when we use GPS to navigate to a new location, we are surrendering our sense of direction and spatial awareness to a computer program. This can lead to a sense of disconnection from our surroundings and a diminished ability to navigate without technological assistance. Similarly, when we use automated systems in the workplace, such as algorithms that recommend products to customers or software that schedules employees' shifts, we may start to feel like our decisions are being made for us. This can result in a loss of autonomy and a decreased sense of ownership over our work. As we become more reliant on technology to perform tasks that were once done manually, we may also experience a decrease in our sense of mastery and skill. For example, when we use word processing software to write documents or spreadsheets to analyze data, we may not develop the same level of proficiency as we would if we were doing these tasks by hand. This can lead to a feeling of detachment from our work and a lack of satisfaction in our accomplishments.
  1. While technology has the potential to enhance our lives in many ways, it is important to be mindful of how it can also impact our sense of agency. By being aware of the ways in which technology can diminish our feeling of control and autonomy, we can strive to maintain a healthy balance between using technology as a tool and relying on our own abilities to make decisions and take action.
