The true meaning of Christmas is love and giving from "summary" of The Gift of the Magi (Illustrated) by O. Henry

In that small furnished flat, where the Magi lived, there was love. It was not a love that flaunted itself in grand gestures or extravagant gifts, but a quiet and genuine love that filled the space between them. Della and Jim may not have had much in terms of material possessions, but they had each other, and that was enough. As Christmas approached, Della found herself in a dilemma. She wanted to show her love for Jim by buying him a special gift, but she had only a small amount of money to spare. She decided to sell her most prized possession, her beautiful long hair, in order to buy Jim a gift that he would cherish. Jim, on the other hand, had his own plan to show his love for Della. He sold his valuable watch, the one thing he treasured most, in order to buy Della a gift that would make her happy. Little did they know that their sacrifices would result in gifts that were no longer of use to them. When Della and Jim exchanged their gifts on Christmas Eve, they realized the true extent of their love for each other. They saw that material possessions were insignificant compared to the love they shared. In their act of giving, they gave each other the greatest gift of all - the gift of love. The true spirit of Christmas lies in the act of giving from the heart, without expecting anything in return. Della and Jim exemplified this spirit by sacrificing their most prized possessions in order to make each other happy. Their love for each other transcended material wealth and demonstrated that true happiness comes from selfless acts of love and generosity. As the Magi learned, the true meaning of Christmas is not found in the material gifts we exchange, but in the love and generosity we show towards others. It is a time to reflect on the importance of giving, not just in terms of material possessions, but in terms of the love and compassion we share with those around us.
