Money cannot buy the happiness they share from "summary" of The Gift of the Magi (Illustrated) by O. Henry
In their small, shabby apartment, Jim and Della counted their pennies, trying to figure out a way to buy each other a Christmas gift. They had so little money, yet they wanted to show their love for each other in some tangible way. Della’s beautiful hair, which Jim loved so much, was her most prized possession, while Jim’s gold watch, a family heirloom, was his most treasured belonging.
Della decided to sell her hair in order to buy Jim a chain for his watch, while Jim sold his watch to buy Della a set of combs for her hair. When they exchanged their gifts, they were both shocked and dismayed at what the other had done. But in that moment, they realized the depth of their love and sacrifice for each other.
As they sat together, holding each other and laughing through their tears, they understood that true happiness could not be bought with money. It came from their love and the selfless act of giving to each other. Their simple gifts, given with pure hearts, became a symbol of their love and devotion, far more valuable than any material possession.
In the end, Jim and Della’s love for each other shone brighter than any gold or jewels. They realized that their happiness was not dependent on wealth or possessions, but on the deep connection they shared. Their love was a gift that could not be bought or sold, but was priceless beyond measure.
