Guilt can eat away at our souls from "summary" of The Fact of a Body by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich

In the darkness of guilt, we find ourselves consumed by our own thoughts, haunted by the weight of our actions. It is a relentless force, gnawing at the edges of our consciousness, whispering reminders of our transgressions. We try to push it away, to bury it deep within ourselves, but it refuses to be ignored. It festers, festers until it becomes a part of us, shaping our every decision, our every interaction. Guilt has a way of burrowing into our souls, twisting and turning until it has taken root. It feeds on our vulnerabilities, our insecurities, growing stronger with each passing day. We may try to hide it, to mask it with smiles and laughter, but it is always there, lurking just beneath the surface. It colors our perceptions, tainting everything we see, everything we do. As we carry the burden of our guilt, it begins to shape our reality, distorting our sense of self. We become prisoners of our own remorse, trapped in a cycle of self-flagellation and despair. We long for redemption, for release from the shackles of our wrongdoing, but it remains elusive, just out of reach. Guilt can manifest in many forms, each more insidious than the last. It can drive us to seek punishment, to inflict pain upon ourselves in a misguided attempt to atone for our sins. It can fuel our self-destructive tendencies, leading us down a path of self-sabotage and despair. It can poison our relationships, driving away those we love most, leaving us isolated and alone. In the end, guilt is a burden too heavy to bear alone. It requires forgiveness, both from others and from ourselves, in order to truly be free. Only then can we begin to heal, to move beyond our past mistakes and embrace a brighter future. Only then can we reclaim our souls from the darkness that threatens to consume us.
