Traditional discipline methods are not effective. In other words, the typical strategies that parents and teachers often rely on when children misbehave - such as time-outs, loss of privileges, or even harsh punishments - are not getting the job done. This is a central premise of the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) model, which is the alternative approach to managing challenging behavior that I propose in this book. One of the main reasons why traditional discipline methods fail is that they do not address the underlying causes of a child's challenging behavior. Punishments may temporarily suppress the behavior, but they do not teach the child how to regulate their emotions, solve problems, or communicate effectively.
