Letting go of ego leads to freedom from "summary" of The Experience of Insight by Joseph Goldstein
When we talk about letting go of ego, we are really talking about letting go of the illusion of a separate self. This illusion of a separate self is what causes us suffering. It is the root of our dissatisfaction, our craving, and our clinging. When we cling to this sense of self, we are constantly trying to protect and defend it. We become caught in a cycle of self-centered thoughts and actions, which only serves to reinforce our sense of separateness.
But when we let go of ego, when we see through the illusion of a separate self, we are able to experience a sense of freedom. We are no longer caught in the narrow confines of our own self-interest. We are able to see beyond our own desires and aversions, and connect more deeply with the world around us. We are able to experience a sense of interconnectedness with all beings, a sense of oneness that transcends our individual identities.
This sense of freedom that comes from letting go of ego is not just a theoretical concept. It is something that can be directly experienced in our meditation practice. When we sit in meditation and observe the arising and passing away of our thoughts, we can begin to see how our sense of self is just a collection of thoughts and perceptions. We can see how this sense of self is constantly changing, constantly in flux.
As we continue to meditate and cultivate mindfulness, we can begin to loosen our identification with this sense of self. We can begin to see how our thoughts and emotions are not who we truly are. We can begin to see how our sense of self is just a mental construct, a product of our conditioning and our past experiences.
And as we let go of this identification with ego, as we let go of our attachment to this sense of self, we begin to experience a sense of freedom. We begin to experience a sense of spaciousness and openness, a sense of ease and flow. We no longer feel the need to constantly defend and protect our sense of self. We no longer feel the need to cling to our desires and aversions.
In this sense of freedom, we can begin to live more fully in the present moment. We can begin to respond to life with greater wisdom and compassion. We can begin to act in ways that are more aligned with our deepest values and aspirations. And in this way, letting go of ego leads to a profound sense of freedom, a freedom that is not dependent on external conditions, but that is always available
