Homework eats family time from "summary" of The End of Homework by Etta Kralovec,John Buell

Homework can have negative effects on family life, such as taking away free time and causing stress. Parents and educators must carefully consider how much homework is appropriate for students in order to support healthy family relationships.
  1. Working on assignments can be a burden for both kids and their families. With the added stress of juggling school work, it is tough to carve out time for the family to just enjoy one another's company.

  3. Spending too much time on school assignments leaves very little room for joyous activities; thus, creating a cycle of burnout and frustration levels increase among every individual.
  4. When children are spending hours completing assignments, it takes away from opportunities for parents to bond with them. Making memories should come first instead of homework in order to strengthen relationships.
  5. It is understandable that classes require certain forms of assignments but they should not overshadow time spent with loved ones. A balance needs to be struck between educational duty and family time in order to create contentment.
  6. School projects can become so overwhelming that there seems to be no time left to just have fun together or do other activities. Student’s grades may suffer when these precious moments are sacrificed.
  7. Without down time, all members of the household may become frazzled. This can rob the family of quality relaxation, creating an environment without chances to spend valuable time with each other.
