Intersectionality is the idea that different aspects of our identities—such as race, gender, sexuality, and ability—intersect to shape our experiences in the world. It acknowledges that individuals experience privilege and oppression based on the intersections of these identities. For example, a Black woman may face discrimination that is unique to her experiences as both Black and female, rather than simply the sum of those parts. By understanding intersectionality, we can better grasp the complexity of social inequalities and work towards a more inclusive and just society. This framework challenges us to consider how systems of power and oppression interact to shape our lives. It calls attention to the ways in which different forms of discrimination can compound and impact individuals differently. For instance, a disabled person of color may face barriers that are distinct from those faced by a non-disabled white person due to the intersection of their identities. Intersectionality also highlights the importance of centering the voices and experiences of those who are marginalized within society. By listening to and uplifting these perspectives, we can gain a more nuanced understanding of how systems of oppression operate and work towards dismantling them.
