He reflects on the passage of time and the fleeting nature of life from "summary" of The Diary of Samuel Pepys by Samuel Pepys

As I sit here with my pen in hand, recording the events of my days, I cannot help but dwell on the relentless march of time. It seems as though just yesterday I was a young man full of vigor and ambition, yet now I find myself in the autumn of my years. The days slip by like sand through an hourglass, each one passing more swiftly than the last. In the midst of my busy life, I am struck by the ephemeral nature of all things. Friends come and go, fortunes rise and fall, and even the grandest of plans are but fleeting shadows in the grand scheme of existence. The world around me is in constant flux, changing and evolving with a speed that is both exhilarating and terrifying. I find myself pondering the brevity of life itself. What is the purpose of our brief sojourn on this earth? Is it simply to toil and strive, only to be forgotten in the sands of time? Or is there some deeper meaning, some higher purpose that eludes our mortal understanding? These questions weigh heavily on my mind as I consider the passage of time and the transient nature of human existence. Each moment is precious, each breath a gift to be cherished. And yet, in the grand tapestry of life, our individual threads are but tiny threads, easily lost in the vast expanse of eternity. As I look back on my own life, I am filled with a sense of both awe and humility. The years have taught me much, but they have also shown me how little I truly know. I am but a speck in the cosmic ocean, a mere blip on the radar of history. And yet, in my own small way, I have left my mark upon the world. And so I continue to reflect on the passage of time, knowing that each day brings me closer to the inevitable end. But I also take comfort in the knowledge that, though my days may be numbered, the legacy of my deeds will endure long after I am gone. And perhaps, in some small way, I will have made a difference in the grand scheme of things.
