As we settled into our new home in the secret annex, we quickly realized that adjusting to this life would not be easy. The confined space, the lack of sunlight, and the constant fear of being discovered all added to the challenges we faced. Despite these difficulties, we had to find a way to make the best of our situation. One of the biggest adjustments we had to make was learning to live in such close quarters with another family. Sharing a living space with the van Daans meant that we had to be mindful of each other's needs and boundaries. It was not always easy to navigate these relationships, but we knew that in order to survive, we had to find a way to coexist peacefully. Another aspect of our new life that required adjustment was the lack of freedom. No longer could we come and go as we pleased, or even step outside for a breath of fresh air.
