Type 2 diabetes is a disease of too much insulin. The primary problem is not blood sugar, but the hormonal imbalance that drives it. Insulin is a fat-storage hormone. When we eat, insulin goes up, telling our bodies to store food energy as fat. This is normal and healthy. The problem comes when we keep eating frequently, causing insulin levels to stay elevated. The body starts to ignore insulin's signals, leading to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is the hallmark of Type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance leads to elevated blood sugar, high insulin levels, and a host of other metabolic abnormalities.
