Masks that hide true intentions and desires from "summary" of The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

In the shadows of the Great Hall, beneath the flickering torchlight, I watched the faeries flit about in their elaborate masks. They were masters of deception, their true intentions and desires hidden behind layers of silk and feathers. In their world, nothing was as it seemed, and everyone wore a mask to conceal their true selves. Even I, a mortal girl in a realm of immortal creatures, had learned to wear a mask of my own. I had to be cunning and clever, always one step ahead of those who would seek to use me for their own gain. I had to hide my vulnerabilities, my fears, my desires, behind a facade of indifference and strength. But the faeries were different. They wore their masks with a certain grace, a certain elegance that belied the darkness within. They were cruel and capricious, beautiful and deadly, and their masks were a reflection of their true nature. Behind every smile, every flutter of a fan, lay a hidden agenda, a secret desire waiting to be fulfilled. I watched as Prince Cardan moved through the crowd, his mask of indifference firmly in place. He was the cruelest of them all, his true intentions known only to himself. And yet, there was something in his eyes, a glimmer of something real beneath the facade. Was it desire? Longing? Or was it simply another mask, another layer of deception to hide his true self from the world? As the night wore on, I realized that the masks we wear are not just for show. They are a shield, a weapon, a way to protect ourselves from the harsh realities of the world. We wear them to hide our true intentions, our deepest desires, even from ourselves. And in a world as cruel as this one, sometimes a mask is all we have to hold onto.
