The capitalist class, or the bourgeoisie, owns and controls the means of production in society. This includes factories, machines, raw materials, and other resources necessary for producing goods and services. By controlling these means of production, the bourgeoisie also controls the labor of the working class, or the proletariat. Through their ownership of the means of production, the ruling class is able to exploit the labor of the working class for their own profit. The bourgeoisie pays workers a wage for their labor, but the value of the goods and services produced by the workers exceeds the value of their wages. This surplus value is appropriated by the capitalist class, leading to the accumulation of wealth and power in the hands of a few.
