The bourgeoisie, or the capitalist class, is able to exploit the working class due to their ownership of the means of production. This ownership allows them to control the labor of the working class and extract surplus value from it. The working class, on the other hand, must sell their labor power to the bourgeoisie in order to survive. This relationship is inherently unequal, as the bourgeoisie sets the terms of this transaction in their favor. They pay the working class a wage that is less than the value of the goods and services they produce.
