McBride's admiration for his mother from "summary" of The Color of Water by James McBride

Ruth McBride Jordan, my mother, was a woman of great strength and resilience. Raised in the South during a time of deep segregation and racism, she faced countless challenges, but she never let them break her spirit. Instead, she used her experiences to shape her into the strong and determined woman that she was. Her ability to persevere in the face of adversity was something that I deeply admired about her. One of the things that I respected most about my mother was her unwavering belief in the power of education. Despite facing many obstacles, she always stressed the importance of learning and knowledge. She instilled in me a love of reading and a thirst for knowledge that has stayed with me throughout my life. Her dedication to education was a constant source of inspiration for me, and it was something that I strived to emulate in my own life. Another quality that I admired in my mother was her fierce independence. She was a woman who did not let anyone else define her or dictate the course of her life. She made her own choices and lived life on her own terms, regardless of what society expected of her. This independence was a trait that I greatly respected, and it taught me the importance of standing up for myself and following my own path, no matter what others may think. My mother's unwavering faith and spirituality were also something that I greatly admired. Despite facing many hardships in her life, she never wavered in her belief in a higher power. Her faith gave her strength and comfort in times of trouble, and it was a source of guidance and inspiration for me as well. Her ability to find solace and strength in her faith was something that I deeply respected, and it taught me the importance of having a strong spiritual foundation in my own life.
