Ego is the source of suffering from "summary" of The Book of Mirdad by Mikhail Naimy

The ego, my beloved brothers, is the root of all sorrow. It is the seed of every pain that sprouts in the heart of man. It is the veil that shrouds the face of Truth from the eyes of the seeker. The ego is a wild beast that devours the soul and blinds the mind. When the ego is allowed to reign supreme, it creates a false sense of self-importance. It builds walls around the heart, separating man from his fellow beings. It whispers lies in the ear, leading man astray from the path of righteousness. The ego is a tyrant that enslaves the spirit and binds it in chains of pride and vanity. The ego is like a dark cloud that obscures the light of the sun. It casts a shadow over the soul, blocking out the warmth of love and compassion. It is a heavy burden that weighs down the heart and stifles the voice of reason. The ego is a poison that contaminates the mind and corrupts the spirit. To free oneself from the grip of the ego is to find true liberation. It is to break the chains that bind the soul and soar to the heights of spiritual enlightenment. It is to strip away the veil of illusion and behold the beauty of the Divine. The ego is like a mirage that lures man into the desert of desire. It promises pleasure and happiness, but delivers only emptiness and despair. Only when man learns to humble himself before the Truth can he find peace and contentment. Only when he lets go of his ego can he experience the true joy of existence. The ego is a false idol that leads man astray from the path of righteousness. It is a false god that demands worship and adoration. Blessed are those who have cast off the shackles of the ego and found freedom in the arms of the Divine. They are like birds that have broken free from their cages and taken flight into the boundless sky. They are like rivers that have broken free from their banks and flowed into the infinite ocean. They are like stars that have broken free from the darkness of night and shone brightly in the heavens.
