Forgiving others is a gift we give ourselves from "summary" of The Book of Joy by Dalai Lama,Desmond Tutu

Forgiving others is a gift we give ourselves. When we hold onto anger, resentment, and bitterness towards others, it does not affect them as much as it affects us. It is like drinking poison and hoping the other person will die. These negative emotions only harm our own mental and physical well-being, leading to stress, anxiety, and even physical ailments. When we choose to forgive, we free ourselves from the burden of carrying around these heavy emotions. It is a liberating experience that allows us to move forward with a lighter heart and a clearer mind. Forgiveness does not mean that we condone the hurtful actions of others, but rather that we release ourselves from the grip of those actions. It is a way of taking back our power and refusing to let the past dictate our present and future. In forgiving others, we also cultivate qualities such as compassion, empathy, and understanding. We begin to see the humanity in those who have wronged us, recognizing that they too are flawed and capable of mistakes. This shift in perspective allows us to break free from the cycle of anger and retaliation, choosing instead to respond with love and forgiveness.
  1. Especially when we have been deeply hurt. It requires courage, humility, and a willingness to let go of our ego. But the rewards far outweigh the challenges. By forgiving others, we open ourselves up to a world of peace, joy, and connection. We create space for healing and growth, both for ourselves and for those around us. Ultimately, forgiveness is a gift that we give not only to others, but to ourselves.
