Let go of attachment to material possessions from "summary" of THE BOOK OF BUDDHA by Arundhati Subramaniam

The Buddha teaches us to release our grip on material possessions. This does not mean that we must renounce all our belongings and live as ascetics. It means that we must not allow our possessions to possess us. When we become attached to material things, we become slaves to them. We are consumed by the desire for more, and we are never satisfied. Our possessions begin to define us, and we lose sight of our true selves. Our happiness becomes dependent on external objects, which are impermanent and fleeting. By letting go of attachment to material possessions, we free ourselves from this cycle of craving and dissatisfaction. We learn to appreciate the things we have without clinging to them. We understand that our true worth does not lie in the things we own, but in the depth of our being. We realize that happiness comes from within, not from external sources. When we detach ourselves from material possessions, we are able to experience true freedom and inner peace. Letting go of attachment to material possessions also allows us to cultivate qualities such as generosity and compassion. When we are not preoccupied with accumulating wealth and possessions, we are more inclined to share what we have with others. We become more empathetic and understanding towards those who are less fortunate. We recognize the interconnectedness of all beings and understand that true fulfillment comes from giving, not hoarding.
  1. Letting go of attachment to material possessions is a practice of self-awareness and self-transformation. It is a journey towards inner contentment and spiritual growth. By releasing our attachment to external things, we open ourselves up to a deeper sense of joy and fulfillment. We discover that true wealth lies in the richness of our hearts, not in the abundance of our possessions.
