The distinction between the body and the soul from "summary" of The Bhagavad Gita by Swami Sivananda

The body is mortal, the soul is immortal. The body is subject to birth, growth, decay and death, but the soul is eternal. The body is made up of the five elements - earth, water, fire, air, and ether. The soul is beyond the five elements. The body is limited by time and space, but the soul is infinite and timeless. The body is the abode of pain, pleasure, and delusion, but the soul is untouched by suffering. The body is the seat of desires, ego, and attachments, but the soul is pure, unchanging, and free. The body is the source of bondage, but the soul is the source of liberation. The body is perishable, the soul is imperishable. The body is temporary, the soul is permanent. The body is transient, the soul is everlasting. The body is the vehicle for the soul to experience the world, but the soul is the essence of life itself. The body is like a garment that the soul wears, but the soul is the owner of the garment. The body is like a wave on the surface of the ocean, but the soul is the depth of the ocean itself. The body is like a shadow, but the soul is the light that casts the shadow. The body is the instrument of action, but the soul is the witness of action. The body is the doer, but the soul is the silent observer. The body is the actor, but the soul is the consciousness behind the action. The body is the battlefield of desires and emotions, but the soul is the calm and steady presence that watches it all. The body is the perishable self, but the soul is the eternal self. The body is the illusion, but the soul is the reality. The body is the prison, but the soul is the liberator.
  1. But the soul is the source of liberation. The body is the cause of suffering, but the soul is the source of peace. The body is the realm of ignorance, but the soul is the realm of wisdom. The body is the seat of ego, but the soul is the essence of humility. The body is the source of attachment, but the soul is the essence of detachment. The body is the source of division, but the soul is the essence of unity. The body is the source of conflict, but the soul is the essence of harmony.
