I contributed to the development of the United States Constitution from "summary" of The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin by Benjamin Franklin

During my time in the Constitutional Convention, I had the opportunity to share my thoughts and ideas on how to form a strong and effective government for our newly independent nation. I believed that a constitution should be carefully crafted to ensure the rights and freedoms of its citizens, while also establishing a system of checks and balances to prevent any one branch of government from becoming too powerful. I argued for the inclusion of a bicameral legislature, with one house representing the people and the other representing the states. This, I believed, would help to balance the interests of both the individual citizens and the states themselves. I also advocated for the creation of an executive branch led by a single individual, who would be responsible for enforcing the laws passed by the legislature. In addition to these structural ideas, I also proposed several specific provisions that I believed would help to safeguard the rights of the people. For example, I argued for the inclusion of a Bill of Rights that would protect individual liberties such as freedom of speech, religion, and the press. I also suggested that the government should be prohibited from interfering in the affairs of private citizens, such as their right to own property or pursue their own happiness. Throughout the Convention, I worked closely with my fellow delegates to debate and refine these ideas, drawing on my own experiences and knowledge of government. While I may not have been the most vocal or influential member of the Convention, I believe that my contributions helped to shape the final document that would become the United States Constitution. In the end, I was proud to have played a part in the development of this important document, which continues to serve as the foundation of our government to this day. I believe that the Constitution we created is a testament to the principles of liberty and democracy that we fought so hard to achieve during the American Revolution.
