Don't fall for the narrative fallacy from "summary" of The Art of Thinking Clearly by Rolf Dobelli

Narratives are powerful tools that shape our understanding of the world. They help us make sense of complex events and provide a framework for interpreting information. However, narratives can also lead us astray. The narrative fallacy is our tendency to construct stories that make sense of random events. We are wired to seek out patterns and causality, even where none exist. This can lead us to oversimplify complex situations and make decisions based on false assumptions. When we fall for the narrative fallacy, we ignore the role of chance and randomness in events. We create a linear cause-and-effect relationship where none may exist. Our brains are wired to seek out explanations, even when events are truly random. This can lead us to create false narratives that cloud our judgment and prevent us from seeing the world as it truly is. To avoid falling for the narrative fallacy, we must learn to embrace uncertainty and randomness. We must resist the temptation to create stories where none exist. Instead, we should focus on gathering as much information as possible and making decisions based on evidence rather than on the narratives we construct in our minds. By recognizing the narrative fallacy for what it is – a trick our minds play on us – we can begin to think more clearly and make better decisions. We can learn to separate fact from fiction and avoid the pitfalls of oversimplification. In doing so, we can navigate the complexities of the world with greater clarity and understanding.
