Don't be swayed by the availability heuristic from "summary" of The Art of Thinking Clearly by Rolf Dobelli

Beware of the availability heuristic, which tricks us into thinking that the more we hear about something, the more likely it is to happen. Our minds are lazy, preferring to rely on the information that is most readily available rather than seeking out the most accurate or relevant data. This mental shortcut can lead us astray, as vivid or recent events tend to dominate our thinking, even if they are not truly representative of reality. When we are bombarded with news stories, social media posts, or personal anecdotes about a particular topic, our brains automatically assume that this information is more important or prevalent than it actually is. This can skew our perceptions and decisions, as we give disproportionate weight to things that are easily recalled rather than looking at the bigger picture. To avoid falling into the availability heuristic trap, we must consciously challenge our assumptions and seek out a broader range of evidence. Just because something is frequently talked about or widely reported does not necessarily make it more significant or likely to occur. Instead of passively accepting what is presented to us, we should actively question the validity and relevance of the information we are exposed to. By taking a more critical and discerning approach, we can avoid being swayed by the availability heuristic and make more rational and informed decisions in our daily lives.
