Conflict stems from a lack of empathy and understanding from "summary" of The Anatomy of Peace, Fourth Edition by The Arbinger Institute

When we find ourselves in conflict with others, it's easy to point fingers and blame them for the situation. We may see their actions as the cause of our distress, failing to recognize our own contributions to the conflict. This lack of awareness stems from a deeper issue - a lack of empathy and understanding towards the other person. When we view the other person as the enemy, we lose sight of their humanity. We fail to see them as individuals with their own fears, insecurities, and desires. Instead, we reduce them to stereotypes and labels that justify our negative feelings towards them. This dehumanization creates a barrier between us and the other person, preventing any possibility of resolution or reconciliation. Without empathy, we are unable to truly understand the other person's perspective. We make assumptions about their intentions and motivations without taking the time to listen and empathize with them. This lack of understanding only fuels the conflict, as both parties become entrenched in their own beliefs and perceptions. Conflict thrives in an environment where empathy and understanding are absent. When we refuse to see the other person's point of view, we create a cycle of blame and resentment that perpetuates the conflict. It is only by stepping outside of ourselves and truly listening to the other person that we can begin to break this cycle and find a path towards peace. By cultivating empathy and understanding towards others, we open the door to deeper connections and resolution of conflicts. When we approach others with an open heart and mind, we create space for dialogue and mutual respect. Only then can we begin to heal the wounds caused by lack of empathy and understanding, and move towards a more peaceful and harmonious existence.
