End of the Company from "summary" of The Anarchy by William Dalrymple
The East India Company was supposed to be an instrument of British trade, a commercial operation that would bring wealth and prosperity to the British Empire. But as it grew in power and influence, it became something entirely different. It became a behemoth, an entity unto itself, with its own armies, its own laws, and its own territory. The Company's rise to dominance was marked by violence and exploitation. It used its military might to conquer and subjugate entire nations, plundering their resources and enslaving their people. Its primary goal was not trade, but profit – at any cost. As the Company's power grew, so too did its corruption. Its officers became greedy and ruthless, amassing vast fortunes at the expense of the Indian people. They lived in luxury while the people they ruled over suffered and starved. The Company's rule was marked by cruelty and oppression. It imposed harsh taxes and brutal laws, crushing any hint of resistance with violence and force. It treated the Indian people as mere commodities, to be bought, sold, and exploited for profit. In the end, the Company's greed and cruelty led to its downfall. The Indian people rose up against their oppressors, determined to reclaim their independence and their dignity. The Company's armies were defeated, its officers were disgraced, and its rule was brought to an end.Similar Posts
