As economic growth fuels the expansion of wealth and prosperity, it tends to concentrate these benefits in the hands of a small segment of society. This results in a widening gap between the affluent few and the struggling many. The affluent society is one where the rich get richer while the poor struggle to make ends meet. The rising tide of economic growth does not lift all boats; rather, it elevates the yachts of the wealthy while leaving the dinghies of the less fortunate to flounder in its wake.
