Lead by example rather than by force from "summary" of The 48 Laws of Power (New Summary and Analysis) by Robert Greene,William Richmond

The key to influencing others lies in showcasing your own behavior as a model for them to follow. People are much more likely to be swayed by your actions than by any amount of coercion or force. By embodying the qualities you wish to see in others, you create a powerful example that they will instinctively want to emulate. When you lead by example, you tap into a fundamental aspect of human psychology - the tendency to mimic those we admire or look up to. By consistently demonstrating the behaviors you want to encourage in others, you make it easy for them to understand and replicate what you are trying to convey. This approach is far more effective than trying to impose your will on others through force or authority. Moreover, leading by example fosters a sense of trust and respect among those you seek to influence. When people see you living out the principles you espouse, they are more likely to believe in the sincerity of your message. This authenticity is a powerful tool for building rapport and gaining the loyalty of others. By contrast, attempting to exert control through force or coercion often leads to resentment and resistance. People naturally bristle against being told what to do, especially if they perceive the commands as arbitrary or self-serving. In contrast, when you demonstrate through your actions the benefits of following a certain path, you invite others to join you willingly and enthusiastically.
  1. Leading by example is a subtle yet potent form of persuasion. It requires patience and consistency, as well as a willingness to embody the values and principles you wish to instill in others. By doing so, you not only inspire those around you to follow your lead but also create a lasting legacy of influence and impact.
