Common challenges faced by EFL learners from "summary" of Teaching EFL Pronunciation: Why, What and How? by M Maniruzzaman

EFL learners often encounter a range of obstacles as they strive to improve their pronunciation skills. One common challenge is the interference of the learners' native language sounds with the target language sounds. This can result in mispronunciations and difficulties in effectively communicating in English. For example, a Japanese learner might struggle with pronouncing the English "r" sound due to the absence of this sound in Japanese. Another issue faced by EFL learners is the lack of exposure to authentic English pronunciation. Without sufficient exposure to native speakers or opportunities to practice pronunciation, learners may struggle to accurately reproduce English sounds. As a result, their speech may sound unnatural or difficult to understand for native speakers. Furthermore, the complexity of English pronunciation rules and patterns can be overwhelming for EFL learners. English has a wide variety of vowel and consonant sounds, as well as complex stress and intonation patterns. Mastering these nuances can be a daunting task for learners, especially if they do not receive proper guidance and instruction. In addition, the fear of making mistakes or being judged by others can also hinder EFL learners' pronunciation development. This fear of embarrassment or criticism can lead to anxiety and reluctance to practice speaking English, which in turn hinders their progress in improving pronunciation skills. Moreover, limited opportunities for feedback and correction in the classroom can impede EFL learners' pronunciation improvement. Without timely and constructive feedback from teachers or peers, learners may continue to make the same mistakes without realizing it, thus reinforcing incorrect pronunciation habits.
  1. EFL learners face various challenges in improving their pronunciation skills, including native language interference, lack of exposure to authentic English pronunciation, complexity of English pronunciation rules, fear of making mistakes, and limited feedback opportunities. Addressing these challenges through effective teaching strategies and targeted practice can help learners overcome these obstacles and enhance their pronunciation proficiency.
