In the world of human interaction, we are often encouraged to default to truth. This means that we are inclined to believe what others tell us, assuming that they are being honest and truthful in their communications. This default setting stems from a fundamental aspect of human nature – our innate trust in others. We want to believe that people are telling us the truth, that they are not attempting to deceive us. However, this inherent trust can make us vulnerable to deception. When we automatically assume that others are telling us the truth, we leave ourselves open to being misled, manipulated, or taken advantage of.
