Communication with strangers is a tricky business. It often leads to misunderstandings, even when both parties are trying their best to convey their thoughts and feelings accurately. When we interact with strangers, we rely on our assumptions and biases to fill in the gaps in our understanding. Moreover, we tend to default to a truth-default mode when communicating with strangers, assuming that they are telling the truth unless proven otherwise. In addition, our reliance on transparency – the idea that people's thoughts and feelings are transparent and can be easily read from their words and actions – can further complicate our interactions with strangers. We assume that others are being honest and open with us, when in reality they may be hiding their true intentions or feelings behind a mask of politeness or friendliness. These factors – our reliance on assumptions and biases, our truth-default mode, and our belief in transparency – can all contribute to misunderstandings when we communicate with strangers. We may misinterpret their words and actions, fail to see through their deceptions, or overlook the true meaning behind their polite façade. As a result, our interactions with strangers can be fraught with confusion, frustration, and miscommunication.
