Multiagent interactions complexity from "summary" of Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom

The complexity of interactions grows exponentially with the number of agents involved. Even with just a handful of agents, the number of possible interactions quickly becomes unmanageable. Each agent has its own goals, beliefs, and strategies, which can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings. As the number of agents increases, the potential for conflicts and misunderstandings grows accordingly. Furthermore, agents may not have perfect information about each other's goals, beliefs, and strategies. This lack of information can lead to miscalculations and unintended consequences. Agents may make decisions based on faulty assumptions or incomplete information, leading to suboptimal outcomes for all involved. Moreover, agents may have limited computational resources or cognitive abilities, which can further complicate interactions. Agents may struggle to process large amounts of information or consider all possible outcomes, leading to suboptimal decisions or inefficiencies in the system. In addition, agents may have different levels of power or influence, which can skew the dynamics of interactions. Some agents may have more resources, capabilities, or authority than others, giving them an unfair advantage in negotiations or conflicts.
  1. The complexity of multiagent interactions stems from the diverse goals, beliefs, strategies, information constraints, cognitive limitations, and power differentials among agents. As the number of agents involved increases, so too does the potential for conflicts, misunderstandings, miscalculations, inefficiencies, and power imbalances. Dealing with these complexities requires careful coordination, communication, negotiation, and cooperation among agents in order to achieve optimal outcomes for all involved.
