We have a tendency to overlook the true sources of our happiness from "summary" of Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert
Our brains are wired to focus on the wrong things when it comes to predicting what will make us happy. We often overlook the true sources of our happiness because we are influenced by our own biases and preconceived notions. We tend to place too much importance on external factors such as money, success, and material possessions, believing that they will bring us lasting joy and contentment.
In reality, these external factors only provide temporary pleasure and do not lead to long-term happiness. Our brains are easily fooled by the idea that more is always better, leading us to chase after things that do not ultimately bring us fulfillment. We are constantly bombarded with messages from society telling us that we need to acquire more in order to be happy, but this mindset only serves to keep us trapped in a cycle of dissatisfaction.
Furthermore, our memories are not always reliable when it comes to assessing what truly makes us happy. We tend to remember events in a way that reinforces our existing beliefs and desires, distorting our perception of what brings us joy. This can lead us to make choices that do not align with our authentic selves, causing us to overlook the things that would genuinely make us happy.
It is essential to pause and reflect on what truly brings us happiness, rather than blindly following societal norms and external influences. By taking the time to understand our own values and priorities, we can uncover the genuine sources of our happiness and lead more fulfilling lives. Only by breaking free from the illusion of what we think should make us happy can we truly discover the real sources of our joy and contentment.
