The development of Hādīth literature is a complex and multifaceted process that unfolded over several centuries. Initially, the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muḥammad were transmitted orally among his companions. The earliest written compilations of Hādīth date back to the late 8th and early 9th centuries, during the Abbasid period. These compilations were often organized thematically, focusing on particular topics or legal issues. Scholars began to scrutinize the authenticity of individual traditions, leading to the development of the science of ḥadīth criticism.
