Perry Wallace encountered racism and discrimination throughout his life, from his childhood in segregated Nashville to his time as the first African American basketball player in the Southeastern Conference. Growing up, he faced racial slurs and taunts from his classmates, who made it clear that they did not want him there. Despite this, Perry persevered, using his intelligence and athletic ability to excel in school and on the basketball court. When Perry enrolled at Vanderbilt University, he faced even more intense discrimination. As the only black player on the basketball team, he was subjected to racist treatment from fans, opposing players, and even some of his own teammates.
