Perry faced racism and discrimination from "summary" of Strong Inside by Andrew Maraniss

Perry Wallace encountered racism and discrimination throughout his life, from his childhood in segregated Nashville to his time as the first African American basketball player in the Southeastern Conference. Growing up, he faced racial slurs and taunts from his classmates, who made it clear that they did not want him there. Despite this, Perry persevered, using his intelligence and athletic ability to excel in school and on the basketball court. When Perry enrolled at Vanderbilt University, he faced even more intense discrimination. As the only black player on the basketball team, he was subjected to racist treatment from fans, opposing players, and even some of his own teammates. He was called names, targeted with physical violence, and taunted with threats of harm. Despite the hostility he faced, Perry remained focused on his goal of playing basketball and earning his degree. Throughout his time at Vanderbilt, Perry was acutely aware of the barriers he faced as a black student-athlete. He was often excluded from social events and activities, faced with unfair treatment from professors and administrators, and denied opportunities that were freely given to his white peers. Despite these challenges, Perry continued to push himself to succeed, both on and off the court. Despite the discrimination he faced, Perry never allowed himself to be defined by the racism he encountered. He remained determined and focused on his goals, using his experiences to fuel his drive for success. Perry's resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity serve as a powerful example of the strength and courage it takes to stand up to racism and discrimination. His story is a reminder of the importance of fighting for equality and justice, even in the face of overwhelming opposition.
