The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah from "summary" of Stories of the Prophets (Peace be upon them) by Imam Imaduddin Isma’il Ibn Kathir
The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah was a pivotal agreement in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It took place in the sixth year after the migration of the Prophet and his followers to Medina. The Prophet had a dream in which he saw that the Muslims were performing the pilgrimage at the Ka'bah, so he set out with a large group of his followers to fulfill this dream. However, the Quraysh, the tribe controlling Mecca, were not keen on allowing the Muslims to enter the city for pilgrimage. After negotiations, a truce was agreed upon at a place called Hudaybiyyah. The terms of the treaty were highly favorable to the Quraysh, causing discontent among the Muslims. One of the conditions was that if a person from the Quraysh embraced Islam and sought refuge with the Muslims, he would be returned to the Quraysh, but if a Muslim sought refuge with the Quraysh, he would not be returned. The Muslims were not pleased with these terms, but the Prophet Muhammad accepted them as a means to avoid bloodshed and to pave the way for peaceful relations with the Quraysh in the future. The treaty also allowed for a period of peace between the Muslims and the Quraysh, which gave the Muslims the opportunity to spread the message of Islam without fear of persecution.- It turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Muslims. It allowed them to focus on spreading Islam and gaining new followers, which ultimately led to the conquest of Mecca just two years later. The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah teaches us the importance of patience, wisdom, and strategic thinking in dealing with difficult situations. It shows that sometimes, what may seem like a setback can actually be a stepping stone to greater success in the future.
