The Quran is the sacred scripture of Islam, believed by Muslims to be the literal word of God as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The revelation of the Quran is a central concept in Islamic belief, as it is seen as the ultimate guidance for all aspects of life. According to Islamic tradition, the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over a period of 23 years, beginning in the year 610 CE. The revelation of the Quran began when the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) appeared to the Prophet Muhammad while he was meditating in a cave outside of Mecca. Jibreel commanded the Prophet to recite the words of God, which became the first verses of the Quran. The Prophet, who was illiterate, repeated the words after Jibreel and thus began the process of revelation that would continue until his death.
