The Caliphate of Umar from "summary" of Stories of the Prophets (Peace be upon them) by Imam Imaduddin Isma’il Ibn Kathir
During the caliphate of Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, the Muslim empire expanded greatly, reaching territories that had never been under Islamic rule before. Umar was known for his justice, wisdom, and piety, and his leadership set an example for future generations to follow. One of the key principles that Umar implemented during his rule was the importance of consultation (Shura). He would consult with his advisors and companions before making any major decisions, seeking their opinions and advice. This not only helped him make more informed choices but also ensured that the community felt involved in the decision-making process. Umar also focused on social welfare and ensuring that the needs of the poor and vulnerable were met. He established a system of public treasury (Bayt al-Mal) to provide financial assistance to those in need, and he would personally go out at night to check on the welfare of his people, making sure that everyone had enough to eat and drink. Another key aspect of Umar's caliphate was his emphasis on justice and equality. He would hold his governors and officials accountable for their actions, and he was known for his strict enforcement of Islamic law. Under his rule, the rights of minorities were protected, and he ensured that all citizens were treated fairly regardless of their background.- The caliphate of Umar was a time of great expansion and prosperity for the Muslim community. His leadership style, based on consultation, justice, and social welfare, set a strong foundation for the Islamic empire to thrive and grow. His legacy continues to inspire Muslims around the world to this day.
