The search for a unified theory continues from "summary" of Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking

The idea of a unified theory is to combine all the fundamental forces of nature into one single theory. The four fundamental forces are gravity, electromagnetism, the weak nuclear force, and the strong nuclear force. Each of these forces is described by its own theory. Gravity is described by the general theory of relativity, while electromagnetism is described by classical electromagnetism. The weak and strong nuclear forces are described by quantum mechanics. The search for a unified theory has been a long-standing goal of physicists. By having one theory that can explain all the forces of nature, it would simplify our understanding of the universe. However, there has not yet been a successful unified theory that can encompass all four forces. One of the challenges in creating a unified theory is that the theories that describe the fundamental forces are based on different principles. General relativity is a classical theory that describes gravity in terms of the curvature of spacetime, while quantum mechanics is a quantum theory tha...
