Racism is not a thing of the past from "summary" of So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo

Racism is not some distant memory to be tucked away in the history books. It is alive and well in our society today, seeping into every corner of our lives. It manifests itself in the way we interact with one another, the opportunities we are afforded, and the prejudices we hold. Despite progress being made over the years, racism still lingers, lurking beneath the surface and rearing its ugly head when least expected. It is not always as overt as it once was, with blatant acts of discrimination and segregation, but it has evolved into something more insidious, more covert. Racism is not just about individual acts of hatred or bigotry. It is embedded in the very systems and structures that govern our society. From education to healthcare to the criminal justice system, racism permeates every aspect of our lives, creating disparities and injustices that disproportionately affect people of color. To ignore the reality of racism today is to turn a blind eye to the struggles and injustices faced by marginalized communities. It is to perpetuate the cycle of oppression and discrimination that has plagued our society for far too long. We must acknowledge the presence of racism in our midst and work towards dismantling the systems that uphold it. It is only by confronting racism head-on, by having difficult conversations and challenging our own biases, that we can hope to create a more just and equitable society for all. Racism may not be a thing of the past, but it does not have to be our future. It is up to each and every one of us to do our part in the fight against racism and strive towards a more inclusive and compassionate world.
