Implicit bias affects decisionmaking from "summary" of So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo

Implicit bias affects decision-making in ways that are often subtle and unconscious, but no less impactful. Our brains are wired to make quick judgments based on patterns and assumptions we have absorbed over time. These biases can shape how we view others, leading us to make decisions that are influenced by stereotypes or prejudices we may not even realize we hold. When we are not aware of our implicit biases, they can seep into our decision-making processes without our knowledge. This can manifest in various aspects of our lives, from hiring practices to interactions with colleagues or friends. For example, a hiring manager may unconsciously favor candidates who share similar backgrounds or characteristics, even if they are not the most qualified for the job. In the context of race, implicit biases can lead to discriminatory behaviors or attitudes that harm marginalized groups. These biases can influence how we perceive others, leading to unfair treatment or unequal opportunities. For example, a teacher may unknowingly give preferential treatment to white students over students of color, impacting their educational outcomes. Recognizing and addressing our implicit biases is crucial in order to make more equitable and just decisions. This requires introspection and self-awareness to identify our own biases and challenge them. It also involves actively seeking out diverse perspectives and experiences to broaden our understanding and challenge our assumptions. By acknowledging the role that implicit bias plays in our decision-making, we can work towards creating a more inclusive and fair society. It is not enough to simply be “not racist” – we must actively work to dismantle the biases that shape our actions and choices. Only then can we truly strive towards a more just and equitable world for all.
