Synergy is the highest activity in all life - the true test and manifestation of all the other habits put together. It is the principle that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, that the relationship which the parts have to each other is a part in and of itself. It is not just a principle; it is a process. In synergistic communication, the whole is created. Ideas are created that were not there before. New ways of doing things are created. In essence, synergy is the essence of principle-centered leadership. It is the essence of principle-centered parenting. It catalyzes, unifies, and unleashes the greatest powers within people. When synergy is pursued as a goal, it is the foundation of creative cooperation. It is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It is the idea that the relationship which the parts have to each other is a part in and of itself. And it is the idea that once you see the whole, you can see the parts in a new light. Synergy works; it's a correct principle. It is the crowning achievement of all the previous habits. It is effectiveness in an interdependent reality—it is teamwork, team building, the development of unity and creativity with other human beings. It is only possible if you have internal security. You cannot be open if you are not secure. You cannot be open if you are not secure in your own worth. You cannot value other people if you value only what they can do for you.
