Emptiness is not nothingness from "summary" of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics by Carlo Rovelli
The idea that the universe is made up of particles and fields – or, more abstractly, of the interrelations between quantities such as energy, temperature, and forces – has been a useful way of thinking about the world for centuries. But when we look closely at what we mean by "particles" or "fields" or "forces", we find that these words refer to concepts that are hard to pin down. They're useful concepts, but they aren't the ultimate building blocks of reality. Even the concept of "empty space" is tricky. Emptiness is not nothingness. Empty space is not really empty at all. It's a bubbling brew of virtual particles and fields that pop in and out of existence in a dance of energy and matter, governed by the laws of quantum mechanics. This quantum dance unfolds in a realm where traditional notions of space and time don't apply in the same way as ...Similar Posts
