Selfcompassion involves treating yourself as you would treat a close friend in need from "summary" of Self-compassion by Kristin Neff

When we think about how we treat ourselves, it's often much harsher and critical than how we would treat a close friend going through a tough time. We tend to be our own worst critics, always quick to judge and condemn ourselves for our mistakes and shortcomings. We hold ourselves to impossibly high standards and beat ourselves up when we inevitably fall short. This constant self-criticism can take a toll on our mental and emotional well-being, leaving us feeling drained, anxious, and inadequate. Self-compassion offers a different approach to relating to ourselves. It involves treating ourselves with the same kindness, care, and understanding that we would offer to a friend in need. Just as we would comfort and support a friend who is struggling, we can extend that same comfort and support to ourselves when we are facing challenges or setbacks. Instead of berating ourselves for our perceived failures, we can offer ourselves words of encouragement and reassurance, reminding ourselves that it's okay to be imperfect and that we are deserving of love and compassion. By practicing self-compassion, we are essentially becoming our own best friend. We are cultivating a sense of warmth and acceptance towards ourselves, even in the face of difficulties. This doesn't mean that we are excusing ourselves from taking responsibility for our actions or striving for growth and improvement. Rather, self-compassion allows us to approach ourselves with a gentle and understanding attitude, fostering a sense of inner strength and resilience.
  1. We are nurturing a positive and supportive relationship with ourselves. This relationship becomes the foundation for our overall well-being and happiness. It helps us to navigate life's ups and downs with greater ease and grace, knowing that we have our own back no matter what challenges come our way. Self-compassion is a powerful tool for promoting self-care and self-acceptance, enabling us to live more authentically and joyfully.
