Take time for selfcare and relaxation from "summary" of Scattered Minds by Gabor Maté, MD

In our fast-paced, demanding world, it is easy to neglect our own needs in favor of meeting external expectations. We rush from one task to another, barely taking a moment to breathe. However, this constant state of busyness only serves to exacerbate the symptoms of ADHD. When we are constantly stressed and overwhelmed, our brains are unable to function at their best. Self-care and relaxation are essential components of managing ADHD. Taking the time to prioritize our own well-being allows us to recharge and refocus. By engaging in activities that bring us joy and peace, we give our minds the opportunity to rest and rejuvenate. This can include anything from going for a walk in nature, practicing mindfulness meditation, or indulging in a favorite hobby. It is important to recognize that self-care looks different for everyone. What works for one person may not work for another. The key is to find activities that resonate with you and make you feel grounded and centered. This may require some trial and error, but the effort is well worth it in the long run. Incorporating regular self-care practices into our daily routines helps to create a sense of balance and stability. When we make time for ourselves, we are better equipped to handle the challenges that come our way. We are more resilient and able to bounce back from setbacks with greater ease. Furthermore, relaxation is a powerful tool for calming the hyperactive mind. By engaging in activities that promote relaxation, such as deep breathing exercises or progressive muscle relaxation, we can quiet the racing thoughts and find a sense of peace within ourselves. This not only benefits our mental health but also has a positive impact on our physical well-being.
  1. Self-care and relaxation are not indulgences but necessities for managing ADHD. By making them a priority in our lives, we can cultivate a greater sense of well-being and resilience. It is essential to take the time to care for ourselves so that we can show up as our best selves in all areas of our lives.
