Emotional trauma can indeed lead to scattered minds. When our emotional systems are overwhelmed by experiences too painful to digest, our minds may resort to various strategies to protect us from being overwhelmed. These strategies often involve dissociation, a splitting off of parts of our experience that are too threatening to integrate. This splitting off can result in a fragmented sense of self, as different parts of our psyche become disconnected from one another.
