Money is a shared fiction from "summary" of Sapiens by Yuval N. Harari,David Vandermeulen

Money is a peculiar thing. Unlike objects such as rocks or trees, money has no intrinsic value. It is simply a piece of paper or a number on a computer screen. Yet, despite its lack of inherent worth, money plays a central role in our lives. We work long hours, engage in complex financial transactions, and even go to war, all in pursuit of this elusive entity. So why do we place such importance on money? The answer, according to Yuval N. Harari and David Vandermeulen, lies in the fact that money is a shared fiction. In other words, money only has value because we all agree that it does. This might seem like a strange concept at first, but consider this: if everyone in the world suddenly decided that money was worthless, it would indeed become so. This shared fiction allows us to create complex societies and economies that would be impossible without it. Money serves as a medium of exchange, a unit of account, and a store of value, making it easier for us to trade goods and services, measure our wealth, and save for the future. Without money, we would revert to a barter system, which is much less efficient and more cumbersome. In this sense, money is a powerful tool that enables us to build the world we live in today. However, this shared fiction also has its downsides. The pursuit of money can lead to greed, inequality, and exploitation. People are willing to do almost anything to acquire more money, even if it means harming others or the environment. In this way, money can bring out the worst in us as well as the best. Despite its drawbacks, money remains a fundamental part of our society. It is so deeply ingrained in our lives that we often take it for granted. But by understanding that money is a shared fiction, we can better appreciate its role in shaping the world around us. Money is not just a piece of paper or a number on a screen; it is a powerful force that influences our behavior, our relationships, and our society as a whole.
