The virtues of giving charity to the poor and needy from "summary" of Sahih Muslim (Volume 8) by Imam Abul-Husain Muslim
The Prophet (may peace be upon him) said: "Charity obliterates sins just as water extinguishes fire." This illustrates the immense value of giving charity to the poor and needy. It is a means of seeking forgiveness for our sins and purifying our souls. By helping those less fortunate than us, we demonstrate compassion, empathy, and selflessness. This act of generosity not only benefits the recipients but also brings blessings and rewards to the giver. In another hadith, the Prophet (may peace be upon him) said: "Protect yourself from Hell-fire even by giving a piece of date as charity." This highlights the significance of even the smallest acts of charity. No gesture of kindness towards the poor and needy is insignificant in the eyes of Allah. Every effort, no matter how small, is rewarded and can potentially save us from the punishment of Hell-fire. Furthermore, giving charity is a means of increasing our wealth and blessings. The Prophet (may peace be upon him) said: "Charity does not decrease wealth." This shows that when we give in the way of Allah, He blesses us with even more in return. Our sustenance is increased, and our wealth is purified through the act of giving. It is a cycle of abundance that continues to benefit us in this life and the Hereafter. Moreover, giving charity is a way to show gratitude for the blessings we have been given. By sharing our wealth with those in need, we acknowledge the favor of Allah upon us and express our thankfulness. It is a way of recognizing that all that we have is a gift from Allah, and we are merely stewards of His provisions. Giving charity is a form of worship that strengthens our faith and fosters a sense of responsibility towards our fellow human beings.- The virtues of giving charity to the poor and needy are manifold. It is a means of seeking forgiveness, protecting ourselves from Hell-fire, increasing our wealth and blessings, and showing gratitude for the blessings we have received. It is a noble act that purifies our souls, strengthens our faith, and earns us the pleasure of Allah. Let us strive to be generous and compassionate towards those in need, for in doing so, we benefit ourselves and bring blessings to our lives.
