The benefits of reciting the Quran regularly from "summary" of Sahih Muslim (Volume 8) by Imam Abul-Husain Muslim

Reciting the Quran regularly brings numerous benefits to the believer. It is narrated in Sahih Muslim that Abu Musa reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The believer who recites the Quran is like a citron whose fragrance is sweet and whose taste is delicious. A believer who does not recite the Quran is like a date-fruit which has no fragrance but has a sweet taste. The hypocrite who recites the Quran is like a basil whose fragrance is sweet, but its taste is bitter. The hypocrite who does not recite the Quran is like a colocynth which has no fragrance and has a bitter taste.”This hadith illustrates the varying benefits of reciting the Quran depending on the sincerity of the believer. The one who recites the Quran with faith and devotion is compared to a citron, which is prized for both its fragrance and taste. The believer who recites the Quran regularly not only gains spiritual blessings but also experiences a sense of peace and tranquility. On the other hand, the hypocrite who recites the Quran is compared to a basil, which may have a pleasant fragrance but a bitter taste. This indicates that superficial recitation of the Quran without true faith and intention may not bring about the same benefits as sincere recitation. In fact, it may even lead to a sense of hypocrisy and insincerity. Furthermore, the hadith highlights the contrast between the believer who recites the Quran and the one who neglects it. The believer who does not recite the Quran is likened to a date-fruit, which may be sweet but lacks the fragrance of the citron. While the believer may still enjoy some blessings, they are not able to experience the full benefits of reciting the Quran regularly. Conversely, the hypocrite who does not recite the Quran is compared to a colocynth, which has neither fragrance nor taste. This emphasizes the emptiness and lack of spiritual nourishment that comes from neglecting the Quran. Therefore, it is clear that the benefits of reciting the Quran regularly are not limited to mere recitation but also depend on the sincerity and intention of the believer.
