The man gains confidence from "summary" of Running with Sherman by Christopher McDougall

In the beginning, the man lacked confidence. He wasn't sure of himself or his abilities. He felt uncertain and hesitant, especially when it came to running. It seemed like an impossible task for him, something beyond his reach. But as he started to train with Sherman, the donkey, something began to change within him. With each run, the man felt a little stronger, a little more capable. Sherman was there by his side, encouraging him, pushing him to keep going. The man started to believe in himself, in his own potential. He saw that he was capable of more than he had ever imagined. Running with Sherman became a source of empowerment for him. As the days went by, the man's confidence grew. He no longer doubted himself or his abilities. He knew that he could achieve great things, that he could overcome any challenge that came his way. Running with Sherman gave him a sense of purpose, a sense of accomplishment. It showed him that he was capable of greatness. By the time they reached the big race, the man was a different person. He stood tall and proud, ready to take on whatever came his way. He knew that he had Sherman by his side, ready to support him every step of the way. And as they crossed the finish line together, the man knew that he had truly gained confidence in himself.
